Either you love your direct sales or you have a lot of hate for an entire industry. But just hear me out on this blog post.
There is a statistic floating around out there that 90% of direct sales representatives lose money. But how can we preach that people need personal finance knowledge without touching on the fact that the average person does not have the business skills to run business finances.
Well, that is ultimately my goal to change that. I want to work with direct sales reps, etsy stores, home based businesses, and other irregular incomes to help them create a business plan and a personal plan to pay their bills and control their business finances.
If we are being honest, people with 9-5 jobs are often losing money too. They are often living in debt to try to prove they have a lifestyle that they don’t have. The more promotions, the bigger the house, the nicer the car, and the better the vacations just for the name of success.
So can we agree that we have a money management problem?
I talked about this just a bit in my post about things you need for successful business finances. This will be an extremely unpopular opinion for some. And that is okay. You do not have to agree with me, but this is definitely something I have held back talking about for a really long time because I knew the backlash I would get. But I want to create a safe place for those who need help with their money, whether personal or business.
Why I want to help Direct Sales THRIVE with Business Budget Coaching
1. Personal Finance isn’t covered, so why would business finance be covered
For the last 5 years, I have been blogging on The Savvy Sagittarius about my journey to learning more about money and helping others along the way.
If we as a country are really struggling with basic personal finances, why on earth would we assume that people would be great at managing business finances.
I am pretty passionate about helping people set their businesses up for success and set financial boundaries. So I think this is so important. Direct sales often get a bad rep because they are usually geared towards women who want to stay home or college students who want to make a little bit of extra cash. I have been both of those women.
I think if people had a better idea of finances going into these direct sales companies, the statistics would be a lot different. That is why I have launched my business budget coaching. I want to help these women learn about their money and succeed.
2. I have been with my direct sales company for 6 years.
I absolutely love my Mary Kay business. The products are amazing. The relationships I have built are great. But direct sales is often like any other business you would start. It takes time. It isn’t just posting on social media. And it is work. That being said, the lessons and friendships that I have built within my company are amazing.
Because I have had the experience, I have seen some succeed and some struggle or give up. Unfortunately, I have seen women lose money. But I have also seen them not do the work. If you invest a bunch of money into a college degree, and then never get a job… you are losing money too.
I will say, they are not for everyone. Not everyone enjoys people or sales and that is okay. I will not tell anyone that it is easy. But it has been a great opportunity for me.
3. Not All Direct Sales Companies are created equally
This is the biggest point that I want to make. Not all companies are the same. They are not equal. I can not speak for every single company. Their pay systems are not equal. I always recommend really looking into the pay structure before getting started.
Not all leadership is the same either. I have had some great leaders and some not-so-great leaders. Such is life anywhere you work. corporate world or entrepreneur life. Some companies are crappy. Some of the pay sucks. But they can be a great opportunity.
4. Not everyone has the creative skills to start an etsy shop/other small business
I do not have an artistic bone in my body so building a small business selling some kind of craft is out of the question for me. But does that automatically mean that I shouldn’t be allowed to make money from home and stay home with my family. This is the biggest reason that I want people to view direct sales as an option.
I talked about how much stay at home moms are worth in a blog post, but realistically, some families can not afford childcare. Especially if you have more than one child. Flexible work from home options help those families hit financial goals (or simply just survive) without one parent having to get a job outside of the home.
Along with the creative businesses, come an initial investment of equipment and materials. As well as a huge learning curve that is required before making any money with it as well. If you have an etsy shop and are super creative, I love that for you. I want to support you as well if you are looking for coaching.
I highly recommend trying the products and loving them first before you join anything. Personally, I have been using Mary Kay products since my mom was purchasing it when I was 13 years old. I knew I loved it. I truly thought the worst that could happen was I get my products at 50% discount.
5. I support women where I can
If I need nails, I go to my color street gal. If I want some new jewelry, I go to my Origami Owl gal. I have a Scentsy gal. Pampered Chef is a favorite of mine. If they have something that you are buying anyway, just give it a try.
When you shop at direct sales or side hustles, you are directly supporting dance classes and family vacations. Ask any representative what her business is paying for this month or what her goal she is working on. Mine helped me pay off debt, buy diapers and date nights, and right now I am using it to pay for a mini vacation.
If you do not need any of their products. Tell them that kindly, but ask how else you can support them. What else could you do without joining their team or buying their products that would get them closer to their goal? I wrote a blog post about 11 ways to support creators, but a lot of them apply to direct sales too.
You still don’t want them bothering you? I totally get it.
Sometimes, the messages can be annoying. Stop avoiding them and be honest with them.
Because do you know how many times I personally read a message and just don’t reply because I have a child screaming or I am making dinner. I do this to my husband. So why wouldn’t I do it to someone else?
Say, “Hey thanks, but I am just not interested in joining your team or buying your products. I would love to support you another way” or simply, “No thanks, but I am cheering you on for your goals.” I would rather someone be honest with me and tell me that they are just not interested than giving me a lot list of reasons why they can’t do it or try to avoid me. It won’t hurt (most of) our feelings.
6. When you have an income plan, you create very specific goals.
I want to coach direct sales companies because there is already a little bit of an income plan set up. My goal is to help you customize it to your specific goals. Say you pay 50% retail on all of your products, the goal with the coaching call is to figure out where the other 50% is going to make your business run smoothly.
I want to help you set up sinking funds, tax savings account, and a plan for other business related expenses so you are really getting the most out EVERY single sale.
7. Asking for help doesn’t make you a failure
I think sometimes in the culture of any small business, you want people to think you are successful so they want to work with you. It can totally be a vicious cycle. But asking for help with a budget or business ideas does not make you a failure. Asking for help means that you are preventing yourself from failure.
I want to create a safe place for my clients to ask money questions and set up their business for success. There are no stupid questions. I won’t tell you “just earn more money” as a budgeting tactic.
Things I will help you do with coaching:
- Break down your goals into achievable steps
- Get the numbers crystal clear on what you need
- Set up a budget that helps your future business
- Create an income plan that works for you and your goals
- Brainstorm income producing activities to focus on bringing in more money
- List out savings goals that will give your business some cushion
- Figure out accounts and systems for more of an automated income plan
I want to cheer you on. I want you to hit your goals and succeed. Prove the negative wrong. Hit those goals for you and your family.
